LOA student arrested after gun found in car

A Lake Oconee Academy senior was arrested Aug. 5 after an investigation that began when a cigarette lighter fell from his backpack and ultimately led to the discovery of a firearm in his car.Abias Smith, 18, of 1690 Northeast St.

LOA students earn Red Cross scholarships

Lake Oconee Academy recently recognized two high school students for their efforts in coordinating the school’s blood drive earlier this year. The two Beta Club members, junior Chandler Clark and senior Lynn Nation, each received a $500 Red Cross scholarship in recognition of the event’s success.

Lake Oconee Academy’s athletic program capped off the 2025-26 school year with another successful campaign, as several teams advanced to the GHSA Class A Division II state playoffs.
In no particular order, Lake Oconee Academy students Jemma Easley, Isabella Broughton, James Poucher, Hallie Wilcher, Sima Bahr, Noah Angle, Ethan Ralston, Alley McCullough, and Emilia Viscarra were each first-place district winners in the 2026 Young Georgia Authors (YGA) Writing Competition and advanced to regional competition. Lake Oconee Academy participated in the Greene County District Spelling Bee on Jan. 13 and is celebrating two of its students for their academic achievements.The local academic competition takes place each year, featuring top spellers from multiple schools across the district.

Lake Oconee Academy’s youngest students celebrated the 100th day of school on Jan. 15. Students within Pre-K and Kindergarten arrived at school in style, dressed as if they were 100 years old, with props and costumes including glasses, canes, cardigans, and gray wigs.
