LOA student arrested after gun found in car

GREENE COUNTY

A Lake Oconee Academy senior was arrested Aug. 5 after an investigation that began when a cigarette lighter fell from his backpack and ultimately led to the discovery of a firearm in his car.

Abias Smith, 18, of 1690 Northeast St., Greensboro, is being charged with possession of a weapon in a school safety zone.

According to a press release from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the school after Smith refused to remove his headphones. During this incident, staff saw the lighter fall from his backpack. The lighter prompted a search of his backpack for additional contraband, which revealed a single bullet.

This led to a search of Smith’s car.

During the search, a handgun and a small amount of marijuana were found.

Lake Oconee Academy CEO Brad Bowling said there was no imminent threat to students or staff at any time.

“School administrators followed established procedures, which led to the discovery of the firearm,” Bowling said. “The Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately, took the student into custody, and made an arrest. During the incident, the middle and high schools were briefly placed in lockdown to allow law enforcement to complete its work safely.

“We appreciate the prompt response of our administrators, staff, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office in safely resolving this incident. Lake Oconee Academy maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding weapons on campus. The student will face disciplinary consequences in accordance with school policy, in addition to any legal consequences resulting from this incident.

“The safety and security of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Today’s incident demonstrates the importance of remaining vigilant and consistently following established safety procedures. We remain committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for every student and staff member.”

According to Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison, there is no evidence to suggest this was a planned incident or that there are any other threats to the school, students, or faculty.
