Uncle Remus Museum celebrates 60th anniversary

Body
The Briar Patch critters would be proud. After debuting in 1881 within the pages of Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, a book written by Putnam County’s own Joel Chandler Harris, the Uncle Remus stories and their characters – pardon me, the critters – remain active and relevant as the main attraction of the Uncle Remus Museum at the southern entrance to downtown Eatonton, which last week celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Old-school politics were on full display on April 6 in Putnam County. A tour of a new building under construction. Public visibility and handshaking. An hour-long confab with local officials featuring needs and wants, frustrations and worries, and, of course, money – responded to with blunt stances and few details.

Frank Spivey: Putnam County’s ‘Marble King’

Body
Putnam County’s ‘Marble King’ On one of the walls in the north hallway at the Plaza Arts Center hangs a photograph – and with it, one of my favorite stories to tell visitors to the Old School History Museum. The photograph features a boy smiling and looking upward while down on one knee and with one hand on the ground, stretched forward.
