Morgan County government bodies establish millage rates

The property tax picture in Morgan County is becoming clear as government entities adopt millage rates. The City of Madison adopted a millage rate of 5.424 citywide, which will obligate a Madison resident to pay for $217 in property taxes for each $100,000 of property owned.

As expected, the Madison City Council adopted its budget for the upcoming fiscal year following a June 28 public hearing, the last of three such hearings that began June 12. The new financial plan includes rate increases for Madison water and sewer services.

Madison council approves permit for apartment house

The Madison City Council approved a conditional use permit at its June 12 meeting that will allow a local developer to construct an apartment house. Zachary Williams, the owner of Z. Williams Development Company, plans to construct a single apartment building containing four apartment units.

The Madison City Council began its month-long process of hammering out a budget for the upcoming year on May 26, and the new Madison City Manager John Klimm is adamant the city needs to reign in some of its spending and closely examine money it does spend.

The Madison City Council approved a text amendment and expanded a height limitation in its zoning ordinances during its last meeting that will pave the way for an upscale Fairfield Inn and Suites Hotel with 84 rooms. Fairfield currently has a hotel in Athens and another in Milledgeville.

Madison continues to seek traffic solutions

The Madison City Council has passed a resolution establishing a set of strategic priorities regarding traffic congestion and heavy truck volume through downtown as it continues to find ways to address issues that negatively impact pedestrian safety, walkability and the historic downtown experience.

Madison approves financial agreement with B&G Club

During its most recent meeting, the Madison City Council dealt with a financial shortfall created by a gap between a grant and a contract. The city recently received a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) as a fiscal agency flowthrough agency for the Madison-Morgan Boys and Girls Club.
