Several Tigers tabbed to All-Region team

Greene County had another successful season in 2024, and the Class A Division II Region 8 coaches recognized several Tigers by voting them to the All-Region team.

Steve Miller, named Region 8 Co-Athlete of the Year as a defensive back and wide receiver, highlighted the postseason award list for Greene County. Miller recently signed with Southern Cal to play safety.

“These past four years playing at [Greene County] meant a lot,” Miller said on Dec. 4 after signing with the Trojans.

On offense, Miller started at quarterback for three years but transitioned to wide receiver as a senior. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder was the team’s leader in receptions (47), receiving yards (644), and touchdowns (eight).

Miller started at safety all four years as a Tiger. The USC signee finished his senior campaign with 32 tackles, 29 being solo. Miller also had a tackle for loss and recorded a team-high seven interceptions in 2024.

Fellow senior Kevin Wynn earned an individual award and was named the Region 8 Defensive Player of the Year.

Wynn, who signed to play at Florida State, racked up 68 tackles and 27 tackles for loss, with seven being sacks. The four-star defensive tackle also had an interception, caused a fumble, and blocked three field goals.

“Playing with basically everybody I grew up with meant a lot. All of us are off to school now,” Wynn said on Dec. 4. “I’m just proud of my brothers and thankful I had the opportunity to play here and build a bond with them.”

Greene County had four players named to the first-team offense. Junior running back Travez Gibson, sophomore wide receiver Kalil Dorsey, and junior offensive linemen Ezekiel Frederick and Jailyn McKellar rounded out the list.

The Tigers also had five first-team defense selections. Senior defensive lineman Laryous Burt, senior linebackers RJ Monford and Amari Durham, senior cornerback Ivan Porter, and junior safety Jailen Ruff earned the honor.

Greene County’s second-team offense selections were junior quarterback Landon Garrettson, junior wide receiver Denim Harris, and senior Kadarius Andrews. Senior cornerback Tamari Roberts was named to the second-team defense. The Tigers also had sophomore offensive lineman Javon Bennett on the honorable mention list.

Greene County went 8-3 overall and made a trip to the postseason for a third straight year under former coach Terrance Banks, who resigned last month.

Banks told Lake Oconee News that this season was special because of how this team responded to adversity.

“We’ve got a bunch of resilient young men,” Banks said. “I’m proud of them for what they accomplished this year.”
