The Greene County football program had a huge night of festivities last Friday for the Tigers’ homecoming game against the Warren County Screaming Devils.
The amazing atmosphere created before the game played a huge role in the Tigers’ 42-12 win over the Screaming Devils, because from the first kick, Greene County’s players were ready.
Forty-seven of the game’s 54 points were scored in the first half, and Greene County’s offense accounted for 35 of those.
Sophomore quarterback Steve Miller had his best game to date in terms of QB rating with a 160.4 and started the game off hot finding Javaris Harris on a deep touchdown pass down the middle of the field.
Miller found Quay Burdette on a 39-yard touchdown pass the drive after and ended the night completing 8-of-10 passes for 216 yards, adding two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Tigers’ passing game was complemented by the run game as the team ran for a combined 171 yards on 23 attempts, finding the end zone on the ground three times throughout the contest.
Senior Malik West got a plethora of carries, and found his way down the field for six on a couple of occasions, both coming in the second quarter.
Greene County led Warren County 35-12 heading into the locker room at halftime as the homecoming court was being recognized. Lake Oconee News’ September Athlete of the Month, Arkiyus Wright, led the court in voting and the Tigers’ defense in the second half.
After earning Homecoming King honors, Wright helped shut out the Screaming Eagles’ offense in the second half, and it was the Tigers’ front seven at the forefront of the stingy play.
After getting into the backfield on two separate two-point conversion attempts, the Tigers’ defensive line harassed the Screaming Devils’ backfield the rest of the game and made it hard to find any yards downfield. Players such as Dayshawn Copeland, Marlow Lamar and Kevin Wynn all had tackles for loss and continued to solidify themselves as one of the best defensive fronts in the region.
After moving to 5-2 on the regular season, head coach Terrance Banks’ squad is set up in a good position to finish out the year on a positive note.
For this upcoming Friday, the Tigers will have no game due to it being their bye week. Instead, the team will use the whole week to prepare for its next region contest against Lincoln County.
Greene has a long history with Lincoln dating all the way back to 1970. The Tigers trail in the all-time series 12-22-1 but have played the Red Devils every year since 2016, so the two programs are very familiar with each other.
Ultimately, the Tigers will look to keep the momentum going with the team’s third consecutive win on Oct. 21.
