FOOTBALL: Sampson leads Oglethorpe County 42-0 over LOA

The Oglethorpe County Patriots’ offensive attack was too much for Lake Oconee Academy to handle in a 42-0 rout.

The Titans’ defense failed to stop Oglethorpe quarterback Will Sampson, who accounted for all six of the Patriots’ touchdowns. Their offense couldn’t muster up any momentum, either. They weren’t able to get into Oglethorpe territory much as the Patriots’ limited LOA’s skill players in space.

The Titans’ rushing attack is their bread-and-butter. The LOA trio of Cameron Kelley, Sumner Coleman and Reid Davis were held in check by Oglethorpe County’s defensive unit all game long. Titans’ quarterback Garrett Payne was also brought down a couple of times by Patriots’ defenders.

The Patriots surely rebounded from their 21-14 loss to Banks County the week before. Sampson threw touchdown passes of varying degrees and lengths to receivers Darius Heard and Brady Allgood, along with punching it in LOA’s end zone twice himself. Heard would leave with two touchdown catches. He also had a dynamic 21-yard touchdown run with under nine minutes left in the first quarter, and he had another read-option keeper run along the right sideline that went for 25 yards.

Oglethorpe County led 35-0 at the half. The Patriots would score one more touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Patriots had a season-high 483 yards of total offense against LOA on Friday night.

The Titans have had a rough go of it through the first four weeks of the season, averaging six points per game. On the other hand, they are giving up 31.25 points per contest on the defensive side of the ball.

LOA head coach Patrick Stewart hopes to turn things around next week against Jasper County (1-3).

The Titans are now 1-3 overall on the season with the loss to Oglethorpe County. It was the second game they’ve been shut out this season. They will face the Hurricanes on Friday night in Monticello.
