Madison police officer nearly hit by fleeing vehicle

A Madison police officer was nearly hit by a car on Oct. 19 while trying to place stop sticks on I-20 in an effort to assist the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office with a high-speed pursuit.

According to reports, Officers Mike Maxwell and Amanda Brown responded to the pursuit and were in the process of deploying stop sticks when they saw the pursuit vehicle approaching the emergency lane and increasing its speed.

According to Brown’s account, “Maxwell deployed his stop sticks in the emergency lane and retreated into the median. The suspect vehicle responded by exiting the roadway and into the median toward Officer Maxwell. Maxwell began to run all the way across the median, narrowly being missed by the subject vehicle by 2 or 3 feet. Officer Maxwell subsequently fell to the ground and rolled over.”

The vehicle then crossed the westbound lanes of travel and drove to the top of the Exit 114 ramp where it stopped due to being disabled by the stop sticks.

A foot pursuit ensued, which resulted in the capture of driver Ricky Colston, 32, of Atlanta, and a female passenger.

In addition to the charges he faces in Taliaferro County, Colston will be charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer by the Madison Police Department.
