PGH exceeds $75 million in statewide economic impact

PUTNAM COUNTY

Putnam General Hospital plays a vital role in improving its health of the local communities, providing lifesaving care 24 hours a day to anyone who walks through its doors.

While that mission is well known, new data shows the hospital’s impact extends far beyond patient care and into statewide economic well-being.

According to a one-page economic impact report released by the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA), in 2023, PGH generated $55.1 million in total economic impact in Putnam County and $75.6 million across the State of Georgia. The figures are based on independent third-party modeling and reflect the ripple effect of the hospital’s spending throughout the economy.

“The care we provide every day is our top priority, but this report highlights how deeply connected Putnam General Hospital is to the overall strength of our community,” Putnam General Hospital CEO Alan Horton said. “From supporting local jobs to ensuring access to care for those in need, the hospital is an essential part of Putnam County’s health and economic well-being.”

In 2023, PGH recorded $22 million in direct expenditures. When combined with an economic multiplier developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, those expenditures supported businesses and jobs well beyond the hospital walls. The multiplier captures economic activity across multiple sectors, including medical supplies, durable medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and other local services.

Beyond its economic contributions, Putnam General Hospital provided approximately $2.26 million in uncompensated care during the same period, ensuring access to essential healthcare services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

GHA’s data also highlights the hospital’s role as a major employer and job creator. PGH sustains more than 119 full- and part-time employees, while its overall economic activity supports 256 jobs in Putnam County and 370 jobs across Georgia. Together, these direct and indirect jobs generate more than $23 million in household earnings statewide.

Founded in 1968, PGH provides emergency care, advanced imaging and diagnostics, surgical services, rehabilitation, and outpatient services to Putnam County and its surrounding communities.
