Smith: Reminiscing and dreaming

One of my pastimes is reminiscing, which seems to be gathering steam as I count my birthdays.The time for reflection most often comes about at the start of baseball season. It causes me to flashback to my days on the farm when there was no television, only scratchy static on an old Philco radio.

4-PEAT: ‘Dogs edge ARC to capture region title

Morgan County soccer topped the Academy of Richmond last week to capture its fourth straight region title.The Dogs completed the season sweep of the Musketeers, winning 2-1 to lock up the top seed in Region 4-AAA entering the postseason next week.

Young nucleus helps lead Diamond Dogs

Morgan County baseball has a young nucleus of four sophomores that has helped the team succeed this year.Four sophomores – Ty Tillery, Hudson Reed, Drew Ainslie, and Davis Strickland – have contributed a lot to the program’s success.

Titans control destiny after sweeping Towns County

After losing two of three games to Washington-Wilkes last month, a Tigers’ loss and a sweep of Towns County helped Lake Oconee Academy get back into first place in the region standings heading into this week.

Baseball Gators ground Eagles – twice

The Gatewood Gators extended their current winning streak to 10 games with a pair of non-region road wins last week over Rock Springs Christian (11-5, 3-0) in Milner and Stratford Academy (10-9, 0-4) in Macon. Gatewood (11-2, 5-0) benefitted from two strong innings from its pitching staff.

Outdoors: Straight up fishing on Lake Sinclair

On the weekend of March 23-24, Sinclair Marina in Milledgeville hosted the Toyota Series and Falcon Bass Boat-sponsored pro, Brian Latimer, his Straight Up Fishing (SUF) school, and his SUF Classic tournament. It was a well-attended event with a lot of fun and good food.

G-Day scrimmage provides plenty of storylines

Georgia wrapped up spring practices this week ahead of Saturday’s annual G-Day scrimmage at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs will split up into two teams – Red and Black – for their final scrimmage of the spring.

Titans look to finish season strong

Lake Oconee Academy boys soccer sits at a great spot with the regular season ending next week.The Titans are 10-2 overall and 4-1 in Class A Division II Region 8 play. They’ll head into the final week of the season on a four-game winning streak, with a chance to add two more victories as well.

Lessons learned for Diamond Dogs

Morgan County dropped a pair of games to Brookwood and Mary Persons a few weeks ago but responded well.After Tuesday, the Diamond Dogs had won six straight, including non-region games against Pike County, Flowery Branch, and Swainsboro.
