After winning his second national title in two years, Georgia Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart immediately hit the skies in his helicopter to travel to 10 schools across the state of Georgia.
One of his many destinations was Greene County High School, where Smart landed in the middle of Tiger Stadium this past Friday.
Smart was greeted by Tigers’ head coach Terrance Banks, athletic director Derrick Williams and principal Eddie Hood during his visit to Greensboro. While he was there, the SEC coach inquired about the program’s history and traditions.
Eventually, most of the school found out that Smart was in the building and lined the halls to see him leave.
In a recent interview with the Lake Oconee News, Williams said the experience was amazing, and he acknowledged how special it was for the Greene County community to be able to experience a moment like that.
“Just for him to be on campus, people understand that our football program is growing, and I think people are starting to realize we do have kids that can play at the next level,” Williams said. “I think it brought a little more notoriety to the program because people are starting to recognize there is some talent here.”
After touring the campus and talking to staff, Smart was able to sign autographs, specifically a football that Williams brought to him. Williams believes that the gift will be able to be auctioned off at a fundraiser for the program.
The few kids Smart inquired about were unable to be fully recruited at this point in the process; however, the Tigers may see more college coaches roll around campus, especially as spring football kicks into gear.
Even though it was just a random winter day at the beginning of a new semester, Smart’s appearance alone brightened people’s day.
