Former Greene County football star enters transfer portal

Former Greene County standout Steve Miller is leaving USC after one season and has entered the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back and former three-star prospect played nine snaps for the Trojans in their season-opener against Missouri State, but didn’t receive any playing time after that.

According to WeAreUSC.com, there was a “logjam of talent” in the secondary, so Miller was expected to transfer.

247Sports.com rated Miller as the nation’s No. 514 overall prospect, No. 44 safety, and No. 72 player in Georgia in the 2025 recruiting class. He initially committed to Mississippi State early in the process but backed off his pledge to the Bulldogs and chose USC two months before the early signing period began.

Miller reaffirmed his commitment to the Trojans and signed his letter of intent on Dec. 4, 2024.

“It was really just the bond I have with the coaches there [at USC]. The bond with them is awesome,” Miller told Lake Oconee News at the time. “I feel like they have the best coaching staff [in the nation] right now. I just want to be a part of something that feels like family. When I went out there, they treated my family and me like we were already family. So, family goes a long way, and that’s why I stuck it out with them.”

On the same day, fellow Greene County senior defensive tackle Kevin Wynn signed with Florida State.

“I cannot put into words how proud I am of both of these young men,” former Tigers’ head coach Terrance Banks said about Miller and Wynn. “It is every child’s dream who plays football to sign with a major program. To see both of them achieve this brings me so much joy. The hard work on and off the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom has helped them reach this moment. I am excited to watch them in their futures.”

Wynn remains with the Seminoles for the time being.

Miller also had offers from Kansas, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Indiana, LSU, Maryland, NC State, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, Georgia State, Memphis, Oregon State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Liberty, and Tulane. He also had interest from Southeast Missouri State, Western Kentucky, Tulane, and UAB.

Miller was a four-year starter for the Tigers. He was the starting quarterback for three years before moving to wide receiver when current quarterback Landon Garretson transferred in from Kell High School before the 2024 season.

Miller also played safety on defense and returned kickoffs and punts on special teams at Greene County.

As a junior in 2023, Miller was named the Class A Division II Region 8 Player of the Year after a season in which he totaled 1,406 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns, plus six interceptions while working at safety.

Miller caught 47 passes for 644 yards and eight touchdowns, while rushing for 31 yards on four carries with a score as a senior. He also totaled 32 tackles, with one for a loss, and seven interceptions on defense in 2024.

Miller will soon announce where he will end up next, as the NCAA transfer portal opens Jan. 2-16.
