Morgan County guard Cydney Burke has been a vital piece of the Lady Dogs’ success this season.
The senior, now in her fourth year on the varsity roster, reached a major milestone by scoring her 1,000th career point during a 65–17 road win over Rutland on Jan. 13.
Burke entered the game just four points shy of the mark and reached it early with a putback.
Head coach Milfred Franklin immediately called a timeout so her family and teammates could celebrate the moment on the court.
“It has been a privilege to have a front-row seat to her journey,” Franklin said. “Cydney has officially stamped her name in this program’s history, and I am truly proud of her.”
Burke described the milestone as a “surreal” experience and credited her family, teammates, and coaches for their support.
“I really didn’t feel it at that moment,” Burke said. “But as the game went on, I realized I had hit a big milestone. It was really great — my team, the fans, my family, and my coaches were all so supportive.”
This season, Burke leads the Lady Dogs in several statistical categories, entering this week averaging 15 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the field.
Morgan County currently holds a 14–6 overall record and is riding a four-game winning streak, with each victory coming by at least 17 points.
Burke said the 2025–26 season has been a “rollercoaster,” but one that has helped the team grow through adversity.
“Every practice, I can see we’re getting better in certain areas,” Burke said. “I really feel like we can make it far in the playoffs. We were one game short last year of making the state championship game, and I truly believe this team can make it to state if we keep building every day.”
Burke also noted significant growth in her own game over her four varsity seasons. After playing primarily in the post early in her career, she has evolved into a more versatile guard for the Lady Dogs.
“My game has really transformed into being a combo guard,” Burke said. “I’m handling the ball more, shooting more, and doing a lot of different things.”
Looking ahead, Burke hopes to continue her basketball career at the next level. She currently holds an offer from LaGrange College and remains in contact with several other schools as her recruitment continues.
