William Jennings “Billy” Bird

William Jennings “Billy” Bird, of Lake Oconee and formerly of Metter, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.

He was the only son of Ulys Bird and Thelma Marthers Bird Collins Turner. Billy graduated from Metter High School in 1964 and attended Georgia Southern University, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. He then attended Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in Cincinnati to obtain an Embalmer and Funeral Director license. 

When Billy and Vicki moved back to Metter from Cincinnati, Billy began working at Taylor Funeral Home with his father-in-law, Colon Taylor. Years later, he became a partner at Taylor and Bird Nursing Home, Inc., and retired in the late 1990s. He was the President of the Willow Lake Golf Club from 1988 to 1992. 

After retiring, Billy and his wife Vicki moved to Lake Oconee and have lived there for the past several years. Billy enjoys hunting, fishing, playing golf, and watching NASCAR racing and westerns.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by a son, William Jennings Bird, Jr., and a daughter, Robin Victoria Bird.

Surviving are his wife, Vicki Taylor Bird of Lake Oconee; a daughter, Dana Bird of Cumming; his grandchildren, Nicholas and Ava of Cumming; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Friday, August 16, 2024, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes of Metter. The funeral service was held Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Metter First Baptist Church, with Rev. Randall Smith officiating. Interment followed in Lake Cemetery.
