Roger Jerome Martinson

After a brief illness, Roger Martinson passed away on Jan. 23, 2024. Roger Jerome Martinson, son of Edwin and Laura Martinson, was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Ortonville, Minnesota.

Roger grew up in Ortonville, Minnesota, and graduated from Ortonville High School. He joined the Army after high school and served for eight years, including time on the Color Guard for General Douglas MacArthur.

After his time in the Army, Roger attended the University of Georgia and the University of Georgia Law School, where he earned his law degree, graduating in 1958. He worked for the Department of Labor and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission until his retirement.

Roger enjoyed playing bridge, and gardening and enjoyed his weekly lunches with friends. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, as well as a loyal watcher of Jeopardy where he normally knew all the “Questions” to the clues. He also had been a long-time member of the Elks Lodge.

He was a member of the Lake Oconee Lutheran Church where he shared his knowledge of the bible in classes he attended as well as classes he taught.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Markwood (Jeff); son, Joseph Martinson (Debra); granddaughter, Kathryn (Bryan); grandson, Scott (Lida); and two great-grandchildren, Haden and Layla; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim Martinson and Stan Martinson; sister, Lois Knopf; son, Thomas Haden Martinson; and Elizabeth Haden Martinson.

A celebration of life service will be planned at Lake Oconee Lutheran Church.
