Nancy Louise Mathis Brewer

Nancy Louise Mathis Brewer, 83, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Nancy was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Atlanta to Robert Bruce Mathis and Betty Ann Hanner Mathis. She attended Marietta High School and St. Joseph's School of Nursing.

During her 20-year nursing career, she was a registered nurse in Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. Nancy later transitioned into the corporate world, serving as vice president of her husband's company, J.R. Brewer III Inc., a Chevron oil distributorship in Jacksonville, Florida.

Nancy's vocational career ended in 1988 when, at 46 years old, she became a full-time Nana.

For 58 years, Nancy's life was centered around her husband, John Robert Brewer III, known to family and friends as Bobby.

She was 14 years old when they met, and she never loved another.

Shortly after completing nursing school, they married, began a family and put down roots in Jacksonville, Florida, where they raised their children, Bo and Anita. In 1995, Nancy and Bobby moved to Greensboro, where they built a home on Lake Oconee in Reynolds Plantation before settling in Harbor Club, where they lived for 27 years.

They loved the game of golf and were former members of Hidden Hills Country Club in Jacksonville, Reynolds Plantation and Harbor Club. In addition to golf, Nancy was a voracious reader, loved playing bridge with "the ladies" and was often described as "the sweetest lady I've ever met!" She was genuinely kind and incredibly generous.

Nancy's favorite role in life, besides being Bobby Brewer's wife, was being Nana to seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was the president of Nana Camp and successfully treated many ailments with a bowl of ice cream, whipped cream or something sweet. She loved giving "driving lessons" in the golf cart and playing games. Nana embodied joy, love, sweetness and fun. She was truly one of a kind.

Survivors include her son, John Robert Brewer IV (Bo) and wife Kirsten; daughter, Anita Louise Taylor and husband Ken; grandchildren Rebecca Brewer Bridgeman, Rachel Brewer Finn, Malia Ana Brewer, Micah Russell Brewer, Sarah Ashley Stewart, Polly Ann Lamb and Nancy Kathleen Sproule; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Linda Beshears; nephews John Sherrod and Mat Beshears; niece Anna Beshears Deason; sister-in-law Betty Brewer Munford and husband Henry Munford; nephews Gray, Ingram and Mac Munford; as well as many cousins and dear friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Brewer; her brother, Robert Bruce Mathis Jr.; and her grandson, John Robert Brewer V.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Walker United Methodist Church.
