Johnnie “Pop” Satterfield Jr., an 83-year-old lifelong resident of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Born on February 21, 1943, to the late Rosa Mae McGinty Satterfield and Johnnie “Buck” Satterfield Sr., Johnnie grew up as a dedicated Boy Scout. He later shared his passion for leadership and service as a Scoutmaster.
A 1961 graduate of Greensboro High School, Johnnie was a standout athlete who excelled in track, football, and basketball. After high school, he honorably served in the United States Army before beginning a career with the Georgia Department of Transportation, where he worked as a Right-of-Way Agent until his retirement in 1993.
His love for sports remained a lifelong passion. For more than 54 years, Johnnie served as the statistician for Greene County Tiger Football, becoming a familiar and beloved presence on the sidelines each season. A devoted Georgia Bulldog fan and avid golfer, he also enjoyed reading and giving back to his community. He was a member of the Jaycees, served on the Housing Authority Board, and was a former County Commissioner.
A faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, Johnnie served as both an elder and a deacon. Affectionately known as “Pop,” he and his wife, “Gran,” were also known throughout the community for the love and care they provided to many local children over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Satterfield; children, Alison Goss, John (Susan) Satterfield, and Alan (Elizabeth) Satterfield; and grandchildren, Mackenzie Satterfield, William Goss, Evan Satterfield, Sidney Satterfield, and Hailey Satterfield. Other survivors include his sisters, Ann Ivey and Judy (Ed) Nichols, along with a large extended family of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carolyn Durden.
Funeral services were held July 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, with Rev. Meg Jackson Clark officiating. The family received visitors at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. that morning. Following the service, interment was held at Greenview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Ray Copelan, Bill Thomas, Russell Brock, Jason Easley, William Goss, and Evan Satterfield.
