Eugene Walter Lindsey, 85, of Union Point, GA, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024, at his residence.
Family and friends also knew him as Gene and PoBoy. Gene, a native of Greene County, was born February 26, 1939, in Greensboro to the late Elisha Jonfair Lindsey and Emily Josephine Boswell Lindsey.
His Greensboro High School Class of 1958 yearbook photo includes the caption “Great day in the morning,” which rightly reflected the beginning of many of his days milking with cousins on the Boswell farm.
After proudly serving in the United States Army in Fort Hood, Texas, he married the former Vivian Gail Rutherford on August 2, 1963. They made their home in Union Point, where he has lived for sixty-one years.
For twenty-eight years, he worked for Georgia Kraft Woodlands Division, which later became Georgia Pacific, where he continued to work for nearly ten years. After retiring, he became the Utilities Superintendent for the City of Union Point, where he worked for six years.
Gene was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Union Point, serving on numerous committees and caring for anything needed at the church. He enjoyed cattle farming and was a founding member of the Greene-Morgan Forest Landowners Association and a member of the Greene County Cattlemen’s Association. Most of all, he loved being Popa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Gail Lindsey, and sisters, Roberta Smith and Emily Smith. Survivors include two daughters, Kathi Smoker and husband Brian of North Augusta, SC, and Donna Edwards and husband Benjie of Washington, GA; a son, Dee Lindsey, and wife Susan of Union Point, GA; sisters, Ann Smith and Christine (Roger) West both of Greensboro; brother, Richard Lindsey of Oconee, GA; eight grandchildren, Trae Adams (Elenn) of Dunwoody, GA, Kassi Adams (Steve Perry) of Atlanta, GA, Brice Smoker (Emmie) of Birmingham, AL, Barret “Bear” Smoker of Columbia, SC, Britt Callaway (Jason) of Washington, GA, BJ Edwards of Arvada, CO, Brooke Cleveland (Clay) of Cumming, GA and Elliott Lindsey of Union Point, GA; eight great-grandchildren, Conor Adams, Mara Adams, Waylon Callaway, Wesleigh Callaway, Taylor Cleveland, Turner Cleveland, Hadley Cleveland, and Hunter Kate Cleveland; several other relatives and many cherished friends.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Union Point with Rev. Alec Ward officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669.
