Domestic incident involving gun results in two arrests

MORGAN COUNTY

Two people were arrested by Madison police officers May 18 following a domestic incident that had escalated to the point the female involved fired a handgun at the male.

Melvin Eugene Reid, 53, of Greensboro, was arrested and charged with obstruction of police officers and terroristic threats after police were able to track him down and subdue him. Nicky Keeley, 47, of Madison, faces a charge of aggravated assault for firing the weapon at Reid.

According to reports, Officer Tyler Finch and Cpl. Andy Koth were dispatched to a Larkmartin Street address at approximately 2:15 p.m. after Keeley called in a report that she had fired a shot at Reid, who is the father of her child, but wasn’t sure if she wounded him or not.

Reid left the scene on foot and Cpl. Koth found him running around the south end of the building where Bernard’s Funeral Home is located.

Koth told Reid to stop but he refused and ran north toward Eatonton Road, according to the report. Reid continued to flee until Koth deployed his Taser and brought him to the ground.

Morgan County Deputy Lee Kitchens arrived as Koth was attempting to handcuff Reid and the two law enforcement officers became involved in a tussle with Reid.

Finch then arrived and said that Reid appeared to be attempting to reach for something in his waistband as Koth and Kitchens were struggling with him.

Finch warned Reid that he would tase him if he continued to resist arrest to no avail.

Finch then conducted a drive stun tase on Reid’s lower back and again between Reid’s shoulder blades.

According to Finch, Reid grabbed Finch’s TASER and tried to take it but instead deployed Taser cartridges into his own back, which allowed the law enforcement officers to subdue Reid and place him under arrest.

Finch said that Koth was accidentally hit with a TASER probe during the struggle.

Keeley later told Finch that Reid has a no-contact order which prohibits him from interacting with her and said he had been stalking her for weeks prior to the incident.

She told Finch that Reid had threatened her earlier in the day but left when he noticed that she was filming him. He later came back, and Keeley fired a single shot at him, according to the report.

Finch said he was able to locate a possible impact point of the bullet in the ground.

Keeley was then arrested for aggravated assault.
