MMC hosts 16th membership supper

MORGAN COUNTY

The 2023 Madison-Morgan Conservancy (MMC) membership supper, sponsored by the Bank of Madison, Branch Farm and Timberland, was held on March 31 in Dan Rather’s barn, at historic Malcom's Crossroads.

Listed in the 2017 Morgan County Greenprint, Malcom’s Crossroads is an excellent example of how communities developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The intact tenant farming crossroads and landscape includes a circa-1820s house, the 1906 Malcom House, the barn, and the commissary, which became the social center for Malcom’s large farm and its surrounding community.

After a three-year-long hiatus prompted by the COVID pandemic, the MMC membership supper brought together approximately 125 members, including 20 new members. The event marked the 16th time it was held at Rather’s barn and the Madison-Morgan Conservancy thanked him for the accommodation.

Speakers included Rachel Kinsaul and Superintendent Cole, who presented the latest news on the Morgan County Agricultural Learning Lab Barn, and FFA students Karoline Norton, Leyton Morris, Sydney and Jalyn Fish, who performed a skit about farmland access and protection. Thanks also went to The Caboose and Junior Conservancy for serving the meal and helping with clean-up.

Incorporated in 2000 as Georgia’s first and only countywide conservancy at protecting farms, forests and front porches for future generations, the Madison-Morgan Conservancy (mmcgeorgia.org) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide public education on conservation matters and to protect and enhance the heritage and quality of life of the residents of Morgan County.
