First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro lost a beloved member late last year. The death of Jay Mayo was deeply felt not only by the church but by the community at large. To honor his life and his time with the church, a special memorial concert is planned Sunday, Oct. 11. 5 p.m.
Highlighting the concert is the gospel group The New Apostles from nearby Crawfordville. Led by Lamar Nix, Jay Mayo’s brother-in-law, on the piano with vocals from Jay Beeland and Paul Jackson, they’ve been entertaining audiences with their special brand of vintage southern gospel music since 1994. Those in attendance will undoubtedly know many of the songs they perform.
A truly special part of the event is that freely given donations at the concert will be provided to a charity that was near and dear to Jay’s heart: Hunting For The Cure, a faith-based, non-profit charitable organization out of Augusta. The four most devastating words a family can hear are “your child has cancer.”
For families facing this crisis, the organization launches their “Sharing Smiles” program. It provides children fighting cancer and their siblings with fully funded and guided excursions to experience God’s creation and the wonders of the great outdoors. Hunting For The Cure has also partnered with another organization that collaborates with farmers, hunters and meat processors to supply these families with year-round beef, pork, chicken and venison, thereby helping to ease the expense of grocery shopping.
First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro is located at 117 S. Main St.
(next to the post office) in downtown Greensboro.
