Mat Dogs qualify seven for state finals

MORGAN COUNTY

This past weekend, the Morgan County wrestling team had a strong showing at the Class AAA sectionals.

The Mat Dogs qualified 13 wrestlers for the state sectionals after capturing the Area 4-AAA title two weeks ago, and seven of them are now headed to the state finals this upcoming weekend in Macon.

Per Morgan County head coach Jared Rector, the “top six from each sectional (A & B) in every respective weight class moved on to state,” which will be held at the Macon Centreplex on Friday and Saturday.

The seven Mat Dogs that are moving on to the Class AAA championship title meet this upcoming weekend will compete against 11 other wrestlers in their respective weight classes for a state title.

At the sectionals meet, Caleb Turner placed first overall in the 215-pound weight division. Miles Butler (106) and Christopher Morgan (175) also placed second in their weight classes. All three wrestlers received a bye in the first round on Friday at the state championship meet.

Also, Omar Hayes took third (132), Cason Turner finished fifth (157) and Chase Scherer was fifth (120). Evan Johnson snuck into the state meet with a sixth-place draw in the 144-pound weight class.

Unfortunately, Dylan Rivers, Jamari Mundy, Judson Carter, Nymh Carrera, Josh Harvey and Tripp Davis didn’t qualify for the state championship after competing in the sectionals on Saturday.

Mundy. Rivers and Carter are serving as alternates in their respective weight classes at the state title meet this weekend, but it’s unlikely they will get a chance to compete. Either way, Mundy, Rivers and Carter are still traveling to Macon with the team to cheer on their teammates that are competing.

Rector is confident those wrestling this weekend can bring home a state title back home to Madison.

“We have a good amount of guys competing,” he said. “There are a few who I think can win it all, but it’s great to see a lot of guys having success. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens.”
