A small plane crashed in Morgan County Sept. 29 at approximately 2 p.m. on Dixie Highway at Shoals Court. The pilot was conscious and alert when airlifted from the crash site to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
The crash downed power lines adjacent to the neighborhood and Dixie Highway while power crews worked at the scene.
The biplane, a Smith Pitts Special S-1, was en route to Madison Municipal Airport when it crashed and landed a short distance from Dream Team Airport, a privately owned airstrip near Dixie Highway.
According to flight-tracking data from FlightAware.com, the aircraft departed Falcon Field at Atlanta Regional Airport in Peachtree City at 1:17 p.m. and crashed in Madison at 1:48 p.m.
The roads reopened nearly two hours after the incident; however, the scene remained active as the MCSO waited for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate and determine the cause of the crash.
No further details have been released regarding the cause of the accident.
Morgan County Sheriff Tyler Hooks provided an update Wednesday morning to the Lake Oconee News, noting the pilot remained hospitalized in good condition and is continuing to recover.
Hooks shared at the time of the update, MCSO continued to wait for the arrival of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is expected to retrieve the plane for further investigation.
