The Georgia Department of Revenue and the Madison Police Department caught three Madison businesses selling alcohol to an underage confidential informant on Sept. 20.
Detectives Wes Thompson and Andre Johnson of the MPD assisted the DOR in conducting an alcohol compliance check of retail businesses that sell alcoholic beverages. The check was to ensure clerks were obtaining proper identification to prevent underage persons from buying alcohol.
A 20-year-old confidential informant entered the Bottle Shop Liquor Store on Eatonton Road and was able to purchase a 1.5 oz. shot of Lemon Lime Liqueur. According to the report, the clerk asked the informant twice if she was 21 and she told him “no” each time. He still sold her the alcohol and was cited for an alcohol ordinance violation by Detective Andre Johnson.
Another check was conducted at the Madison Chevron on Eatonton Road where the informant purchased a 25-ounce Budweiser. The clerk did not ask the informant for identification and also received a citation for violating the alcohol ordinance.
A third violation of the ordinance occurred at the Marathon Store on Eatonton Road. The informant was able to purchase a 24-ounce can of Icehouse beer at the register. According to the report, the clerk asked the informant for her identification, but when the informant said she didn’t have it, the clerk proceeded with the sale.
