Buckhead elects third mayor in last 12 months

The small, quaint little town of Buckhead in Morgan County elected its third mayor in the last 12 months at Monday’s city council meeting.

Former Buckhead mayor Steve Bryant edged out former Morgan County Board of Commissioners member Thomas Bell.

At Tuesday’s Morgan County BOC meeting, chairman Ben Riden said that Bryant will serve as a council member until he is sworn in as the city’s new mayor.

The topic came up on Tuesday during the new business portion of the BOC’s agenda. The commissioners were talking about it after appointing several community members to various board positions within Morgan County.

“They couldn’t swear him in because they couldn’t find a judge that late,” Riden joked.

Buckhead has seen its fair share of controversy in terms of the mayor over the last year.

Last summer, former mayor Ricky Walker resigned twice. Almost a month later, tenured Buckhead city council member Drew Miller was appointed mayor.

Miller, who is Walker’s nephew, lasted until April of this year, which is when he resigned. Shortly after, Buckhead’s city attorney, Christian Henry, left his post.

Now, Bryant will return as the city’s mayor after previously serving a 12-year stint in the past. He took over for his father, Paul Bryant, who served for two decades. Also, Bryant’s daughter, Jennifer Doran, is currently serving as the superintendent of the Morgan County Elections Board.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Bryant is currently retired from the Morgan County Building Inspector’s office, where he worked for a period of time.

Hopefully, after Bryant is officially sworn in, the city of Buckhead can get back to normalcy.
