At the Morgan County Charter School System (MCCSS) Board of Education meeting held on June 13, Josh Jones and Reagan Folk were recognized by the board.
Jones placed first in two events at the Class AAA state meet in May. He medaled in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.
“It was about this time last year we honored him for the 300-meter individual championship,” athletic director Doug Connelly said. “I think the challenge was to come back and repeat. Not only did he do that, but he also one-upped it and went and won two this year.”
Folk is the 2022 Area 1 - AAA Girls Golf Individual Champion and the 2022 GHSA Class AAA girls golf individual state runner-up. She will be competing in Junior Nationals in November.
“I’ve seen some of y’all at the golf course, and she can beat all of you,” coach Pam Hooten said. “Last year she was a good golfer, finished 15th in the state, but now she’s turning into a great golfer. … I’m just so proud of you.”
Also recognized at the meeting were the 2022 Aspiring Leaders - Kayla Andrews, Elizabeth Barnes, Jennifer Cofield, Bo Larkins, Kayla Matthews, Anna Ross and Kaleigh Sidwell.
“All of these individuals are leaders in our classrooms and also teacher leaders at our school level,” Asst. Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Susan Tolbert said. “They completed the requirements of the Northeast Georgia RESA Leader Academy and participated in additional experiences here in our own schools.”
The Asst. Superintendent for Administrative and Student Services, Jay W. Homan, reported that the enrollment number continues to increase.
The total enrollment for FY22 was 3,376. He updated the board that LaReece Stewart was selected as the System Teacher of the Year (TOTY), so she will now represent the school system for the State TOTY program.
He also reported that Jessika Washington will serve on the Georgia Professional Standard Commission (GaPSC) Special Education Task Force.
Tolbert reported that Summer School is underway with approximately 50 students at each of the four schools. “We are fortunate and very thankful for the generosity of the community that we are able to feed all the students breakfast and lunch at no cost,” Tolbert said.
According to Tolbert, approximately 25 students are interested in the full-time Morgan Virtual Program (MVP) for the 2022-23 school year. Due to the lack of applications for elementary grades, MVP will be offered in grades 6-12 only.
Superintendent Virgil Cole reviewed the FY23 annual budget. Two public meetings will be held to review the FY23 proposed budget: Monday, June 27 at 9 a.m. and Monday, July 18 at 5 p.m.
To conclude the meeting, the board unanimously approved these items – the updated job description for the Director of Human Resources, the purchase of a sound system for the football stadium from DB Integrations for $46,673.01, the financial report, the GSBA risk management services for property, fleet, liability and crime insurance coverage, the FY23 contract to serve as Fiscal Agent for Family Connection Partnership with DHS, the FY23 budget to advertise, the spending resolution for July 2022, the Board Policy EEE (Wellness Program), BCBI-R(1) (Public Participation in Board Meetings), JB (Student Attendance), and IDEA (Unstructured Break Time), for Public Comment, the overnight field trip request for FFA Officer Retreat and Training, personnel list and the recommendation to enter executive session to discuss the superintendent’s annual evaluation, personnel and safety plan.
