The City of Madison is implementing a new promotional system for its police department, designed to foster greater opportunities for advancement.
According to a press release from the City of Madison, the new system aligns with the recommendations from an audit conducted earlier this year.
City manager John Klimm approved the establishment of structured career steps for entry-level officers.
“It is critically important that we offer career advancement opportunities for our dedicated employees,” Klimm said. “One reason for the significant turnover over the past ten years has been lack of advancement opportunities.”
Under the new system, police officers will be promoted to the rank of senior police officer after serving the City of Madison for a minimum of two years, completing 650 hours of advanced training, and maintaining good standing with above-average evaluations.
A single stripe on their uniforms will distinguish those achieving this milestone. Officer Amanda Brown, who is working toward her following promotion eligibility, expressed appreciation for how Chief Whitehead does regular check-ins with officers.
“Everything is amazing! I’m very thankful for all Chief Whitehead has done and is doing for this department,” Brown said.
Officer Jonathan Mills was promoted to senior police officer after the new organizational structure was implemented, and he met the outlined requirements.
Officers who serve five years, complete 1,300 hours or more of advanced training, and continue to perform above average are eligible for further career advancement.
These officers will be promoted to the rank of master police officer (corporal) and will wear two stripes on their uniforms to signify their accomplishment.
Additionally, current corporals have been reclassified to the rank of sergeant, and their uniforms now have three stripes to denote their supervisory status.
A promotional opportunity has also been announced, allowing all sergeants to participate in the promotion process. The sergeant who scores the highest in this process will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
Working in partnership with its leadership team and employees, the City of Madison continues implementing new strategies to recruit and retain great officers who are proud to work for the Madison Police Department.
