A Madison man was arrested in the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office parking lot on Dec. 15 on multiple charges after a confrontation with Madison and Morgan County law enforcement personnel.
Shane Kimsey Harris, 52, has been charged with reckless driving, DUI, violation of headlight requirements, speeding, improper U-turn, failure to maintain lane, and felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
According to reports, Harris called Morgan County dispatch and made multiple threats toward dispatchers and law enforcement after he was trespassed from an address on Price Mill Road earlier in the evening.
During his 30-minute conversation with Morgan County dispatch, Harris said that he had smoked methamphetamine and planned to steal a Hellcat or Santa’s sleigh from Countryside Chrysler, the report said.
Madison police officers Mandi Brown and Tyler Finch decided to watch for Harris in front of the liquor store in the West Washington Gateway area on Hwy 83 after learning from Deputy Christopher Lash that Harris might be driving a white Lexus and coming toward Madison on Hwy 83 from Bostwick.
According to Finch, a vehicle matching Lash’s description approached their location. The driver slowed down, flashed his lights, and honked his horn before turning right on South Main Street at the downtown intersection.
Finch pursued Harris and the Lexus and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Harris would not stop.
Harris drove at relatively low speeds in the 30 to 40 mph range as he turned onto Atlanta Highway near the Madison city limits.
While on Atlanta Highway, Harris turned off all his lights made a left on Monticello Highway and a right onto Lions Club Road, and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph, according to the report.
Finch said Harris made an illegal U-turn at Lions Club Road and Eatonton Road and headed back toward Monticello Highway.
Harris then turned into the MCSO entrance where Finch and Deputy Phillip Knowles were able to box in the Lexus and end the pursuit.
