A Lithonia man died May 18 when his Honda Civic crashed into a concrete bridge pier supporting the Seven Islands overpass.
According to Sgt. N.B. Carter of the Georgia State Patrol, 25-year-old Devonte Abner of 6458 Alford Way received fatal injuries upon impact at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Reports say Abner was traveling westbound in the left lane on Interstate 20 near Mile Marker 121 in Morgan County when he suddenly left the travel lane and drove into the median.
According to a witness traveling in the left lane approximately 100 yards behind Abner’s Honda, the veer into the median was quick but not as if the driver had snatched the steering wheel. The witness then said the vehicle never slowed down and traveled straight into the concrete support pier.
According to the GSP, the vehicle traveled between the guardrail on the westbound side and the cable barrier on the eastbound side for approximately 1000 feet in a straight line before striking the bridge pier.
Upon impact, the Honda Civic came to a final, uncontrolled rest.
Tire marks observed in the grass indicated the vehicle's path of travel and no brake markings were observed in the grass or on the roadway in the area where the vehicle exited the roadway.
