On April 17, 86 students from Morgan and Greene counties participated in the Morgan County Special Olympics held at Bill Corry Stadium.
The annual event kicked off with Covenant Park Church Pastor Danny Harrell leading the opening ceremony.
Morgan County seniors Pauli Morris, Josh Van Why, Lauriel Arnold, Mariah Riddlehoover, and Lily Martin carried the torch during the ceremony to officially open the Special Olympics.
Students participated in the 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, tennis ball throw, and softball throw, as well as an adapted javelin competition made possible with javelin donations from the community.
The Special Olympics featured a developmental area where students in wheelchairs could participate in activities tailored to them and their abilities.
The event also included a sensory area, snow cones from Kona Ice Lake Oconee, inflatables, face and nail painting, and games.
Morgan County Charter Schools thanked event sponsors, including the Chase Stephens State Farm team who provided hot dogs for staff and volunteers, Ansley Real Estate’s Danielle Copeland who provided sack lunches for the students, Lowry’s Feed & Farm Supply, Madison Fitness, Steven Bullard with Morris Realty, Peak Steele, ChopHouse, Kona Ice, Yolonda’s Sweets Truck, and Fresh Cotton.
“It is my pleasure and honor to plan this event year after year for our Special Olympians in Morgan and Greene,” Special Olympics Coordinator Noelle Brownlee said. “I just love seeing their smiles and their faces light up. It brings such joy to my heart.”
