Fifth Street Community Garden opens to the community

The grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Fifth Street Community Garden (FSCG) gathered community members in Madison on May 5. Located at 664 Fifth Street in Madison, FSCG is a nonprofit, the goal of which is to bring the community together and increase local food sources.

The Madison City Council dealt with a full slate of zoning issues at its most recent meeting held on May 8, approving another Low Income Tax Housing Credit (LITHC) development that represents the fourth such project brought to Madison in the last decade.

Council paves way for new Madison hotel

The Madison City Council approved a text amendment and expanded a height limitation in its zoning ordinances during its last meeting that will pave the way for an upscale Fairfield Inn and Suites Hotel with 84 rooms. Fairfield currently has a hotel in Athens and another in Milledgeville.

Purvis accepts head coaching job at South Effingham

For the past two seasons, Loren Purvis has been Morgan County’s offensive coordinator, but will now take on a new role at South Effingham High School, where he was recently named the new head coach. In April, the former Bulldogs’ coordinator and assistant coach announced the news via his Twitter.

Places Far and Near opens at MAGallery

Madison Artists Guild Gallery (MAGallery) is excited to welcome Atlanta artist Lisa Guyton to its gallery for her one-woman exhibition titled “Places Far and Near.” Guyton is a visual artist who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and has called Atlanta home since 1995.

The longtime president of the Madison-Morgan Chamber of Commerce, Bob Hughes, recently announced he is stepping down after 12 years on the job. The Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce voted to accept Hughes’ resignation after due consideration, effective July 1, 2023.

Man reaches for gun during traffic stop

A man pulled over for reckless driving reached for a gun during a traffic stop, but a Morgan County deputy and a Madison police officer were able to subdue and arrest him on multiple charges on April 25, following a traffic stop that soon became dangerous.

Judge orders Rivian opponents to pay bond to continue lawsuit

Work to develop the site for one of Georgia’s largest economic development projects continues for EV-maker Rivian as multiple cases work their way through courts.Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas A. Cox Jr. ruled on April 21 that the state is entitled to a bond of $364,619.

‘Playing with Love’: Lady Dogs defeat Long County, Jackson to advance to Elite Eight

The Morgan County girls soccer team is headed back to the Elite Eight for a second consecutive year. The No. 1 seed Lady Bulldogs (16-1-1) knocked off No. 4 seed Long County 5-0 last week before defeating No. 3 seed Jackson 7-1 Monday to advance to the next round of the Class AAA state playoffs.
