McCurley: High school football starts next month

Georgia’s high school football season officially begins on Aug. 16, but scrimmages start on Aug. 2, which is wild. So, the next couple of weeks will be busy, but I am excited for the ride as I enter year four of covering the sport.

The fortnight it takes to determine the various champions of Wimbledon, one of the classiest sporting events worldwide, is likely on every true sports aficionado’s bucket list. Wimbledon is the equal of the Masters golf tournament and the Kentucky Derby in class.

Lady Gators bond under new coach

Gatewood girls’ basketball has been doing a lot of team bonding this summer under new coach Ferdinand Farley.Farley, who coached the Lady Gators as an assistant the past few years, took over from Jordan Walters.

Rock Lobsters release 2024-25 season schedule

The Rock Lobsters, Athens’ new Federal Professional Hockey League (FPHL) team, has released its inaugural 2024-25 season schedule.Most notably, the previously announced Oct. 26 date for the team’s home opener in the still-under-construction Capital Center Arena has been postponed to Dec.

Titans building ‘chemistry’ on court

The offseason and summer months have been productive for the Lake Oconee Academy boys’ basketball team.

Putnam’s Holder finds college home

Putnam County infielder and pitcher Hunter Holder had a phenomenal senior campaign as a War Eagle. In 37.1 innings pitched this past season, Holder struck out 46 batters while walking just 22 and allowing just 33 hits and 27 runs.At the plate, Holder had 13 hits, 14 runs scored, and six RBIs.

Wooten ‘excited’ to play at Augusta University

Playing baseball collegiately has always been Lawson Wooten’s dream. Now, that dream will soon become reality, as the Gatewood pitcher and infielder recently announced he will play baseball at Augusta University next spring.“It’s honestly a dream come true, and I am excited,” Wooten said.
