MCCURLEY: Local softball, volleyball teams begin seasons

Last week I wrote about football, so now I will write about local softball and volleyball programs beginning their respective seasons. Football is obviously king; however, there are some great softball and volleyball programs in Lake Country.

FOOTBALL: War Eagles looking for ‘consistency’

Last year, Putnam County High School (PCHS) football enjoyed one of the best seasons in its long-and-storied history. In Shaun Pope’s fourth season at the helm, the War Eagles went 12-1 overall, tying a program record for most wins in a single season.

FOOTBALL: Peters primed to ‘exceed expectations’ for War Eagles

Putnam County running back Tamarion Peters is primed to have a breakout senior campaign. Last season, he mainly split carries with Cedrion Brundage, who rushed for over 1,000 yards. Peters still had an impressive junior year, rushing for 463 yards on 53 attempts with 10 touchdowns.

FOOTBALL: Gators looking to get back to glory

The Gatewood Schools football program is hoping to rebound this year after a rough 2021 season in which the Gators went 5-7 after winning three-straight GISA Class AA state titles.

Members of this year’s senior class at Gatewood High School have already been a part of two championship-winning football campaigns. The Gators return nine of these players this season, and they all hope to end their high-school careers on top.

FOOTBALL: Banks and the ‘Boro Boyz’ look to bounce back

After missing the playoffs the last three seasons, the Greene County Tigers are ready to get back to winning ways. Since the program began back in 1966, the Tigers have won seven region championships and the state championship once in 1993.

Greene County High School has seen multiple players advance from its football program to play at the next level, and Arkiyus Wright and Malik West hope to be the next pair of Tigers to do so.

FOOTBALL: Titan seniors encouraged by the game

Most kids heading to high school in Georgia have a long-established football program to try out for, but the senior class at Lake Oconee Academy (LOA) never had that luxury.

Out in the depths of Siloam, the Nathanael Greene Academy (NGA) Patriots have been preparing for their 2022 football season. What makes this team so unique is they play eight-man football as a member of the Georgia Association of Private and Parochial Schools (GAPPS).
