The Morgan County cross country team showed out at its only home meet of the regular season.
The Dogs placed second overall, finishing right behind Class 7A’s Mountain View High School.
Sophomore Sam Wingfield, who had a stellar freshman year, placed second overall in the boys’ race with a time of 18:22:39. The Dogs didn’t have any other runners in the top 10, but sophomore Dylan Smith (20:35.96) and senior Tyson Frederick (20:42.13) finished 16th and 17th, respectively. Freshman Gael Valente (20:59.94, 21st) and senior Andrew Whitten (21:00.33, 22nd) round out the top 25 for MCHS.
“We are super proud of our runners this week,” boys’ head coach Brian Johnson said. “Everyone moved up and did better times.”
The Lady Dogs also had a second-place finish. They finished behind GISA’s George Walton Academy.
Junior Brenna Garrett finished fourth overall with a time of 23:19.53. Sophomore Ari Paine was two spots behind Garrett in sixth place, posting a mark of 24:21.82. Senior Cailyn Berisko (24:39.80, 8th) and junior Morgan McCormack (24:44.86, 9th) rounded out the top 10 for the Morgan County girls’ cross country team.
Junior Addie Harper (25:58.19, 13th), sophomore Madison McKee (26:57.66, 21st), sophomore Laura Torok (27:05.83, 23rd) and senior Drew Biersmith (27:18.09, 25th) were the rest of the Lady Dogs’ athletes that placed in the top 25.
“What a great race,” girls’ head coach Erin Spinks said. “We had all our girls running together in our home meet, which is always a fun time. Our top five girls scored in the top 15, bringing our team to second place. I love coaching these girls and seeing them work together to crush goals.”
Both MCHS cross-country teams will be back in action again this Thursday, Sept. 1 at North Oconee High School in Bogart. The Dogs and Lady Dogs will host the Region 4-AAA meet for a second consecutive year on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Bill Wood Park.
