Tigers wax Warriors to stay perfect

GREENE COUNTY

Greene County started its season off on a mission, and it continued at Wilkinson County this past Friday.

The Tigers (4-0) dominated the game from start to finish, defeating the Warriors 41-6 in Irwinton.

Greene County came out to play, shutting out Wilkinson in the first half as it led 34-0 after two quarters. All of the Tigers’ five touchdowns in the opening half came via the ground.

To start the second half, the clock was running as Greene County cruised to victory. The Warriors didn’t give up, though, and got on the board late in the game with their only score.

Greene’s run-game continued to power its offense, totaling 220 yards on the ground last Friday.

Sophomore Travez Gibson totaled 76 yards on 14 carries with a trio of rushing scores, which is a career high. The 5-foot-6 running back averaged 5.4 yards per attempt in the win.

Senior Aveon Baugh toted the rock for 58 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, while junior Amari Durham rushed for 45 yards on six attempts. The pair averaged over seven yards per carry.

Junior quarterback Steve Miller also found success on his feet. On top of passing for 97 yards on 5-of-7 attempts, the 6-foot-3 athlete also scored twice with his legs while accruing 41 yards. Senior Quay Burdette hauled in a career-high four receptions for 65 yards.

As a team, the Greene County offense racked up 313 total yards – surprisingly the least yards they’ve finished a game with all season. Regardless, it was enough to outscore Wilkinson County by a good margin.

The Tigers’ defense also played a pivotal role in defeating the Warriors.

On top of having 17 takedowns, head coach Terrance Banks’ defense got behind the line to rack up five tackles for losses against Wilkinson County. The unit also won the turnover battle – intercepting Warriors’ quarterback Garin Adside off once and also forcing a fumble on Friday.

BJ Mullens took the game’s only interception to the house, solidifying the win over the Warriors. Highly touted prospect, Kevin Wynn, was also a terror on the defensive line for the Tigers. Wynn had four tackles for loss and a forced fumble against Wilkinson County.

The victory marked the Tigers’ second consecutive win over the Warriors and the tenth overall. It was also the largest margin of victory since the two programs saw each other in 1995.

Greene County is now tied with region foe Aquinas ranked No. 6 in GHSA’s Class A Division II.
