COMMERCE — Greene County’s track and field team had a strong showing at the Georgia High School Association’s Class A Division II state meet over the weekend at East Jackson High School.
Greene County’s teams combined to have over a dozen athletes compete at the state’s highest level.
Before the season, longtime Greene County track and field coach James Miller wanted his athletes to reach this point. This year, he had high expectations for his runners, throwers, and jumpers.
“We’re solid all around, and I’ve some guys and girls from last year who are going to compete,” Miller said in March. “Last year, we set the bar high with several state placers. I want to be there again this May.”
It’s safe to say that Greene County’s athletes met Miller’s preseason expectations and performed well. The Tigers had a strong showing at the Class A Division II state meet at East Jackson High School.
Greene County’s boys had a stellar outing in the shot put, with three athletes finishing in the top eight. Dayshaun Copeland and Kevin Wynn finished third and fourth, and RJ Monford placed sixth.
In other boys’ events, Chris Lowe, a senior at Greene County, finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at 15:84 seconds. The senior also competed in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing eighth with a mark of 41.64.
Greene County’s 4x100meter relay, consisting of Lowe, Doremus Alexander, Laryous Burt, and Javius Cleveland, finished third.
These four combined to post a mark of 43.46 at the state meet.
Greene County athlete Taylor Lamar highlighted the girls’ individual events with a fourth-place finish in the high jump. She set a personal record to help land a spot on the podium at the state meet.
The Greene County girls’ 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Quanas Benford, Carla Dunn, Alliyah Rhodes, and Asia Tucker, placed fourth at the state meet. They combined for a time of 4:31.91.
Greene County’s boys team placed 11th overall at the state meet, while the girls’ squad finished 24th.
The Tigers wrapped up a successful year as the boys won the region and the girls placed second.
Next season, Greene County will be on a mission to send more athletes back to the Class A Division II state meet and have more qualifiers and placers.
Miller always wants the best for his kids.
“We are blessed with some great athletes here at Greene County,” Miller said. “I’m proud of these kids.”
