The Morgan County High School softball team recently had several players earn All-Region honors.
One Lady Dog player earned an individual award, nine were named to the All-Region team, and one garnered honorable mention. Third-year head coach Chad Pigg also received a prestigious postseason honor.
Sidney Fischer was named the Region 2-2A Pitcher of the Year for performance in the circle this past season. The sophomore struck out a team-high 81 batters and only had 27 walks with a 2.13 ERA in 72.1 innings.
Sophomore Kennedi Johenkins was also dominant in the circle, as she struck out 34 batters in 108.2 innings.
“I am incredibly proud of both Sidney Fischer and Kennedi Johenkins,” Pigg said of his two pitchers. “Kennedi is on the first team as a utility player, but played a huge role in the circle for us this season. Both sophomores stepped up in big, big ways in the absence of a returning senior (Ryleigh Hilsman), out due to injury.”
Morgan County had five players selected to the All-Region 2-2A first team, including Johenkins and fellow sophomores Hadleigh Bruce and Chandler Aaron, along with junior Zi Robinson and senior Mary Faulkner.
Four more Lady Dogs – freshman Maylin Whitaker, junior Payton Davis, plus seniors Jaleigh Harper and Jayden Daniel – were All-Region second team selections. Junior Ava Gaddy was listed as an honorable mention.
“We have good players who are also good kids. They have gotten increasingly hungrier over the last three years and have raised their expectations of themselves and of our program,” Morgan County’s coach said. “They deserve all the credit. Morgan is a special place to play, and I want everyone in our program or anyone close to it to remember that. It’s no shock to me that we have so many kids receiving these accolades.”
Pigg was also named Coach of the Year after leading the team back to Columbus for a third straight season.
“It’s incredibly humbling to receive any award, especially one that encompasses the entire state that has some of the best softball in the country,” he said. “Any accolade I ever receive is a reflection of the people I have around me, both on staff, at home, and around the state. I am blessed with great people who love this sport and are committed to growing in it, making my job much easier. I try to lead and serve the way the Bible calls us to.”
Morgan County had another successful season under Pigg in 2025, finishing as runners-up to Sonoraville in the Class 2A Elite 8 bracket. The Lady Dogs won the Class 2A state championship in 2024 and hoped for a repeat, but fell short. They did win the Region 2-2A title and finished the season with a 25-10 overall record.
