Greene County High School’s Chris Lowe will have the opportunity of a lifetime this Sunday in Atlanta.
Lowe, a senior football player for the Tigers, will get to lead the Atlanta Falcons out of the tunnel and onto the field before they play the Indianapolis Colts at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.
Lowe was recently nominated as a finalist for the Atlanta Falcons High School Man of the Year award, and the winner will be named on Sunday at the game. The award is presented by Georgia Power.
Lowe told Lake Oconee News this week that he’s excited about the opportunity.
“I was able to do this because I had to write a three-page paper about all the things I’ve done this year. I’ve done a lot of community service-type things and I sent that into the Falcons,” Lowe said. “I was able to make it to the finals for it. It’s a cool chance for me to represent my school in Atlanta.”
Whether it was mowing lawns, helping feed the homeless at shelters, or visiting the elderly at nursing homes, Lowe has done it. He enjoys doing things for others in the community that helped raise him.
Lowe takes pride in being a Greensboro native and giving back to the community.
“I’ll go around and cut grass for the elderly who can’t do that type of stuff. It’s very rewarding,” Lowe said. “It’s great because I love seeing all the smiles that I get to put on other people’s faces. I make their day that much better. It’s worth it in the end to see someone smile. I do all of this for that.”
Greene County football head coach Terrance Banks spoke highly of Lowe in August before the season.
“He is a kid a coach wants on his team,” Banks said of Lowe. “We’re going to count on him to be a leader this year. He’s done a lot of community service in the offseason, helping lead the young guys.”
While Lowe admits he’s not a Falcons fan, he’s excited to step foot onto a football field again, especially after Greene County lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champion Bowdon last month.
Lowe was on the receiving end of a controversial call that ended the game. The senior caught what was thought to be the game-winning touchdown, but the officials ruled him short of the goal line.
“It’ll be great to be on a field again,” Lowe said. “And for me to meet the players in high school, that’s exciting. Maybe in the future, I could play for them. That would be wild. I can’t wait to do it.”
Lowe is a little nervous, though. As he runs out onto the field, he hopes he doesn’t do anything “embarrassing.”
“I hope I don’t trip up on national television,” Lowe joked. “That would be super embarrassing for me.” Besides being a great member of the community and teammate for the Tigers, Lowe is a model student. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound athlete has a 4.02 grade-point average (GPA) as a senior at GCHS.
Lowe hopes to continue his career on the football field at the next level. He currently has two offers from Kentucky State University and Wilmington College but hopes for more to come in soon.
“My senior season went great. It was awesome to see that we were able to turn around a program that was going downhill so fast. For us to have a bittersweet ending like that, it does upset me,” Lowe said. “At the end of the day, we did all we could, and now my dream is to play football at the next level.”
