Game Preview: Greene County at Oglethorpe County

GREENE COUNTY

The Greene County football team is traveling to Lexington to play Oglethorpe County this Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the fifth game of the season.

• Series Record: Greene County leads the all-time series, 25-3.

• Last Meeting: Oglethorpe County defeated Greene County 34-33 in 2022. Second-year head coach Terrance Banks and his team come into this contest wanting to avenge their last-minute loss to the Patriots a year ago.

In that game, the Tigers got out to a two-touchdown lead to start the first quarter. The defense gave up 21 in the second quarter but still led by six heading into the locker room at halftime.

Greene’s defense locked back in to start the second half and gave the team a 12-point lead heading into the last 12 minutes by keeping Oglethorpe out of the end zone.

Unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to hold on and gave up 14 unanswered to lose the contest by one point – a tough result for Banks and company to swallow.

The Tigers come into this year’s installment with a chip on their shoulder. They had won the last 20 meetings against the Patriots before last year’s matchup, and now have the talent to get back on the winning side of the series.

Offensively, Greene County has had no problem putting up points through its first four games. The Tigers are averaging a little over 35 points per contest – anchored by a core of running backs that average over 250 rushing yards per game.

On top of that, quarterback Steve Miller has thrown for 491 yards on 37-of-47 passing, including five touchdowns to only two interceptions. His top targets, BJ Mullens and Qua Burdette, have combined for 320 yards and three of those scores.

The defense has also looked impressive, having only allowed 38 points through four games. They have also had six takeaways in that time span – four through the air and two on the ground.

Kevin Wynn, Justin Hill, RJ Monford and Deyshawn Copeland all lead the team with double-digit tackles and have made it hard for opposing teams to move the ball in general.

Given that the Patriots mainly like to move the ball on the ground, the Tigers’ front seven will be tested on its physicality. With a win, Greene County would have its first 5-0 start since 2005 when the program eventually made it to the state semifinals.
