Greene County football travels a short route down Highway 15 to face Hancock Central for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
• Series History: Greene County leads, 40-6.
• Last Meeting: Greene County defeated Hancock Central 27-18 in 2022.
After an impressive win over Morgan County last Friday, the Tigers are preparing for the Bulldogs of Hancock Central for their first road game of the season.
These two programs have a lot of history with each other, dating back to 1972 when Greene County took the first game of the series with a 25-0 win. Over the last five head-to-head meetings, the Tigers have only lost one game to the Bulldogs, coming in the form of a blowout loss.
Last season’s win over the Bulldogs came in convincing fashion though, and the Tigers have all the momentum after defeating Morgan County last week to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Hancock Central came into the contest at 1-1 with a win over Glenn Hills a few weeks ago and a loss to Harlem last Friday. In those two games, the Bulldogs gave up 70 points combined and only put up 44 on offense.
Looking ahead, the Tigers’ front seven should have no problems slowing down the Bulldogs’ offense that relies heavily on the run.
Offensively, quarterback Steve Miller and company should be able to find areas of Hancock Central’s defense that are weaker than others. He threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the game against Morgan County and is starting to see more production from his wide receiver core.
Bj Mullens, Kamari Smith, Qua Burdette and Chris Lowe all had receptions last week and stepped up in an important way compared to the team’s first performance.
The ground game should also be a viable option for the Tigers this Friday. Amari Durham and Aveon Baugh are two Tigers’ running backs who have found the end zone through two games. The other, Travez Gibson, has yet to score but currently leads the team in rushing yards.
At the end of the day, Greene County head coach Terrance Banks makes sure his players know there is just one message he wants them to stay focused on this season.
“Go 1-0. We’re just trying to go 1-0 every week,” Banks said.
