‘Dogs softball on hot streak, get set for final stretch

Morgan County softball has been hot as of late, winning six of its last nine heading into this week. The Bulldogs are 12-6-1 overall and 8-1 in region play following Tuesday’s league loss to Harlem.

Morgan County head coach Chad Pigg feels like his team is improving at the right point of the season.

“We’ve been playing better and our girls have also been buying into the things we’ve been preaching,” Pigg said of his squad. “They are starting to reap some of the benefits of those things.”

The first-year Bulldogs’ coach doesn’t want his team to peak at this point in the season, but just to continue being consistent. He said his players have “handled their business” in a way he finds suitable.

“We’ve done great in region play. It’s always important to win those. We’ve played well in them<” Pigg said. “In non-region games, we have lost a few, but those losses have made us better.”

Morgan County was 4-5 in non-region competition entering this week. The Bulldogs have faced some tough non-region competition, losing to Social Circle, Franklin County, Prince Avenue and Apalachee.

However, they’ve been competitive in most of those losses, and have even beaten a few quality non-conference opponents such as Oconee County, Greenbrier, Glasock County and Monroe Area.

“Every win is a big one,” Pigg added. “We’ve got Harlem coming up, so we see where we will stack up.”

Morgan County won six straight heading into Tuesday’s game against Harlem, which came out on top, 1-0. The Bulldogs of Colombia County are now first in the Region 4-AAA standings after the win.

Morgan and Harlem will play again Monday afternoon at home for the deciding game of the series. If the ‘Dogs win, they’ll force a game three, which will be played at a later date this month.

With a few weeks left still in the season, Pigg doesn’t want his team to keep their foot on the gas pedal.

“I feel like this whole year we’ve been headed in the right direction. We haven’t had many major setbacks as far as how we attack the day and certain teams,” Pigg said. “I feel like we’ve been able to build consistently all year, so I [think] we’re in a much better spot than we were two weeks ago. I would say you never want to peak at the midpoint or down-the-stretch-part of the year.”
