Banks takes job at Central Gwinnett

It didn’t take long for former Greene County football head coach Terrance Banks to find another job.

Banks, who led the Tigers to a 24-10 record and three playoff appearances over the last three seasons, is now the head coach at Central Gwinnett. He was announced as the Black Knights’ new head coach on Jan. 3.

According to Greene County High School athletic director Chad Smith, Banks and the program parted ways in a “joint decision” after the 2024 season. Banks submitted his letter of resignation during the first week of December.

“First, we want to thank Coach Banks for the last three years. He put a lot of time, energy, and effort into changing the culture at Greene County,” Smith told Lake Oconee News last month. “He did a fabulous job of it.”

Banks took over for longtime Greene County head coach Larry Milligan in 2022. In his first season, Banks led the Tigers to a 6-5 overall record, and they made a trip to the postseason for the first time since 2018.

Greene County vastly improved in year two under Banks’ leadership. The Tigers went 10-2 and made their first second-round postseason appearance in five years. They fell to Bowdon, the reigning and eventual state champ.

In 2024, Banks guided Greene County to an 8-3 finish. The Tigers then faced a tough first-round match against Irwin County, a powerhouse program in South Georgia. The Indians won that game 42-7, ending their season.

Banks elevated the program at Greene County and sent several athletes to play at the collegiate level, including two four-star prospects in defensive tackle Kevin Wynn (Florida State) and safety Steve Miller (USC).

“I want to thank him for all he’s done for me and my family,” Miller said on Dec.4 after signing with the Trojans. “He put Greene County back on the map. I wouldn’t be playing at the next level if it weren't for him.”

Banks commuted to Greensboro from Gwinnett County every day while he coached the Tigers. In an interview after the 2023 season, he said, “It's worth it.” He said he enjoyed making a big difference in a small town.

“I love these kids, man,” Banks said. “My job is to mold these young men into great students, leaders, and fathers.”

Banks has also been the head coach at Meadowcreek (2021), Tri-Cities (2020), and Newton (2013-18). In 11 seasons, he has compiled a 65-49-1 career record.
