I find it interesting that in 2018, when short-term rentals were voted on in Putnam County, both Commissioners Alan Foster and Steve Hersey were the only commissioners voting no.
Fast forward to today, and Putnam County is struggling to find a way to control and regulate the mess both commissioners knew would be a detriment to our lake communities.
Foster resigned his elected position due to the “secret meeting” being held by the other commissioners, which is now being investigated by the Georgia Attorney General’s office. Foster has publicly endorsed Dr. Hersey in an open letter being circulated.
Thank you, Commissioner Foster, for your service to the lake area!
Erin Olson
Foster’s endorsement letter is printed below:
The decision to resign from my position as your County Commissioner was very difficult. As I hope my decades of service have demonstrated, I’ve never been a quitter. It was, however, the best decision for me personally. That said, my greatest concern was whether a candidate with ability and experience would decide to run for the vacant seat.
The Third District, including portions of both Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, is the fastest-growing area of Putnam County. Commercial and residential growth are both on fire and there’s a lot more to come. This will put a strain on infrastructure, public safety, and resources.
It will be extremely important for future decisions to be made to balance the competing forces of lifestyle protection and the growth of tax revenues. It is also imperative these decisions are made transparently, with consideration toward the residents who call the Third District their home.
Thankfully, a candidate has qualified with all the ability, experience, and determination necessary to represent the residents of the 3rd District. Not only does he have considerable political experience and a record of achievement, but he also has a record of community involvement.
During 35 years living on Lake Sinclair with his wife Jane, he has been a member of several community organizations and charitable efforts: Eatonton Kiwanis, The Harmony Community Association and Relay for Life among them. He has also been a great friend to many who know him well.
That candidate is Dr. Stephen Hersey. Please support and vote for Steve in the upcoming Special Election.
Alan Foster
