I was surprised by some of the City of Greensboro's budget amounts published in last week's Lake Oconee News. In case you missed it: $250,000 for a street sweeper, $136,500 salary plus $43,000 benefits for the new city manager, and $2,000,000 in police services.
The population of Greensboro is 3,675 +/-. I'm not suggesting the current manager is not worth his salary, but for such a small town, it feels excessive.
As a point of comparison, the City Manager of Tybee Island makes $147,457. The island's permanent resident population is close to 3,000 but they welcome almost two million visitors per year, which requires more attention than I imagine our city requires.
I do not see enough positive change happening in the City of Greensboro to justify these numbers. And if it costs this much to just keep things in their current state, then we need to assess, as a community, what we want the city to be.
It may be time to clean house and start over with a whole new leadership team who has the experience to take Greensboro forward in a responsible, cost-conscious, and impactful way.
