After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, Richard Hewatt McCullough of Greensboro, GA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Richard was born on July 3, 1941, in LaFayette, GA, to Grayson and Irma Hewatt McCullough. He spent his childhood in the Summerville, GA area.
After graduating from LaFayette High School, he joined the United States Army and served as a Radio Relay and Carrier Attendant in Okinawa.
Following his military service, Richard graduated from Berry College. He began his 31-year career teaching Industrial Arts at Gordon, Towers, and Lithonia High Schools, as well as Salem Middle School in DeKalb County, GA.
Upon retiring, Richard was never one to sit still.
He continued to enjoy finding treasures at estate sales, antique shows, and flea markets in the Atlanta, Athens, and Lake Oconee/Greensboro, GA area. He also loved sharing his treasures and spending time with his four grandchildren, who lovingly called him Papa.
Richard is survived by his wife Ruth; his children Tony (Christine) Alvarez and Cindy (David) Grippando; his grandchildren Tyler and Sarah Alvarez, Josh Bailey, and Catherine Grippando; his sister Sylvia Cordle; and nieces Rachel (Randy) Ragland and Sylvia Lee (Michael) Keziah. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers-in-law, John Rohret and David Cordle, and his grandson Aiden Alvarez.
A Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, located at 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642, with Father Adam Blatt officiating. The family received friends in the church’s social hall following the Funeral Mass. Interment will follow on August 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114.
