Dorothy “Dottie” McClain, 83, of Eatonton, passed away at her residence on July 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Nov. 2, 1941, to the late Richard and Elizabeth Sprouse. She was preceded in death by her sister, Paula Spradin.
Dottie was a teacher for 35 years total, 18 years at Putnam County High School, teaching history and geography.
Dottie attended Asbury University in Kentucky and received her Bachelor’s, Master’s degrees, and Specialist’s degree in Education from Georgia College and State University.
Dottie taught Sunday School at the First Methodist Church of Eatonton, was a member of the First Methodist Women's Society, and was a trustee of the Church. Dottie helped create the Plaza Arts Center and was a member of Putnam Alliance Performing Arts (PAPA), and served on the Board of the Georgia Profession Standards Commission.
Dottie is survived by her husband, Dennis McClain; stepdaughters, Barb McClain (Lynn) and Laurie Hardy (Alan); and step-grandchildren Dalton Wright, Logan Wright, Reagan Hardy, Milo Hardy, Ivy Hardy, Sydnee Hardy, and Drake Hardy.
A memorial service will be held on July 17 at 4 p.m., at the Plaza Arts Center.
