Barbara Laverne Jones Torbert

Barbara Laverne Jones Torbert, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and respected member of the Greene County community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the age of 87.

 She passed away at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, Georgia.

Born in Athens, Georgia, on February 20, 1939, Barbara was the daughter of the late Grady T. Jones and Jessie Pauline Holcomb Jones.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and dedicated her career to serving the community as the Greene County Cooperative Extension Agent for the University of Georgia. Through her work, she educated and assisted countless residents, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

On October 21, 1962, she married the love of her life, Gerald Wayne Torbert, in Hull, Georgia, and together they built a life centered on family and service in Greensboro. She was a devoted member of Grace Fellowship and cherished time spent caring for her family.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of more than 63 years, Gerald Torbert of Greensboro; her children, Kelly Torbert Hayes (Mike) of Winder, Tammy Torbert Leavell (William) of Greensboro, and David Alan Torbert of Greensboro; and her cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Manley Rosecrans (Robert), Jessica Manley, Trey Hayes (Grace), Davis Hayes (Mackenzie), and Addison Hayes.

She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren — Christian Fuller, Hudson Manley, and Rylan Lord — who brought her immense joy.

In the early 1970s, she and Gerald served as foster parents, providing care for infants and young children. She is also survived by numerous relatives and a wide circle of friends who will deeply miss her.

A celebration of life was held Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Grace Fellowship, 1971 South Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. The Rev. Dr. James A. Long officiated the service. The family received friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the service time. Inurnment followed at Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Davis Hayes, Trey Hayes, Bryan Dotson, Austin Jones, Ryan Richter, and Landis Gilmore.
