Football is officially here.
High school football in the Peach State begins this week with scrimmages. The Georgia Bulldogs start fall camp. There is also an NFL preseason scrimmage between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Detroit Lions.
We are so back, man. This is the best time of the year. Football is a sport that everyone can rally around, whether it’s rec ball or the NFL.
Baseball was always my first love, and I played it longer, but football has always been my favorite sport to watch.
There’s just something about it. Maybe it’s because football in the South is king, or perhaps it just means more.
While I prefer college ball over the NFL, high school football will always be my favorite. I loved attending games as a kid, listening to the band, watching the cheerleaders, and seeing the town shut down every Friday.
Now, I get to cover high school football for both of my jobs. I think it’s very important to tell the stories of young athletes. Highlighting how they overcome adversity or how they performed in a big game is important to me. I also think it’s essential to cover coaching changes and the recruitment of players, too.
It lets the community know what’s going on, and going on year five now, I take a lot of pride in doing that.
Last season was my favorite. I got to see some exciting games, and most of my local teams made the playoffs. I don’t root for the teams I cover because it’s my job to stay unbiased, but it is a lot easier when they win.
So, here’s to year five and hopefully five more. I wish all the local teams well, and let’s get after it.
I’ll be on the sidelines at Al Reaves Field this Friday for Putnam County’s scrimmage versus West Laurens.
I can’t wait!
