During its End-of-Year Celebration on May 28, Morgan County Charter Schools (MCCS) awarded the “Going Beyond” service coin to Chelsea Hayes, Dr. Dennis Fordham, and Dr. Virgil Cole, whose leadership, courage, and compassion have made a lasting impact on the district.
Hayes, a teacher at Morgan County Elementary School, was recognized for an act of true heroism — selflessly assisting a fellow district employee during an accident. District leaders said her quick thinking and kindness reflect the very best of Morgan’s schools.
Fordham was recognized for stepping in as interim superintendent during a critical time and providing steady leadership.
“Though his time at MCCS was short, his impact was significant — and he will forever be a Bulldog,” district leaders said.
Cole, who retired earlier this year as superintendent, was recognized for his five years of service to the school system.
“Cole led Morgan County Charter Schools with vision, heart, and unwavering dedication,” district leaders said. “He guided the district through some of the most challenging times in education, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and led MCCS to earn numerous recognitions for its excellence. A true servant leader with a heart for people, Dr. Cole’s legacy will continue to shape our district for years to come — as we continue to learn, lead, and thrive.”
Morgan County Middle School teacher Danielle Bruce was also named the System Teacher of the Year.
The celebration also brought together three leaders representing the past, present, and future of the district.
“Dr. Virgil Cole, our esteemed past superintendent, Dr. Dennis Fordham, our steady interim leader, and Dr. Susan Stancil, our visionary new superintendent, stood united in their commitment to excellence,” district leaders said. “Each has played — and will continue to play — a vital role in guiding Morgan County to new heights. Together, they symbolize a proud tradition and a bright future. Thanks to the strong legacy of our previous leaders, our new leadership is empowered to lead Morgan County Charter Schools to even greater achievements.”
