Diamond Dogs rack up All-Region honors

MORGAN COUNTY

In 2025, the Morgan County baseball team had a successful postseason run, advancing to the Class AA state semifinals.

Following the season, nearly a dozen Diamond Dogs were named to the All-Region team.

The Dogs had three players highlight the postseason awards list, sweeping the Player of the Year awards, and seven more combined to make the All-Region first and second teams.

Junior Hudson Reed was named Region 2-AA Player of the Year. He was one of Morgan’s top sluggers, batting .450 with team highs in hits (49), runs (50), and home runs (12). Reed also pitched and played infield for the Dogs.

Reed said he couldn’t have won the award without his teammates. He felt their support throughout the season.

“It is an honor to win this award,” Reed said. “These things can’t happen without great teammates and coaches.”

Junior Ty Tillery, a Georgia commit, was named the Region 2-AA Pitcher of the Year. The right-hander had a 10-1 record with a team-high 66 strikeouts as well as an impressive 2.49 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Tillery also played outfield and was a solid hitter.

“It was really a blessing being able to receive this award after bouncing back from a tough football injury and developing and getting better throughout the year,” Tillery said, referring to when he got hurt on the gridiron in the fall.

Morgan junior Caylem Richardson was awarded the Region 2-AA Offensive Player of the Year award.

In 74 at-bats, Richardson batted .311 with three home runs and 18 RBI with 14 runs scored. He also had 24 hits, including nine extra-base hits, with three of them being triples. Richardson was also a productive pitcher for the Dogs with a 1.97 ERA and 54 strikeouts.

“At the beginning of the season, I struggled. I got into the cage and made a few changes that turned out to be the key to my successful season at the plate,” Richardson said. “I am blessed and thankful to be nominated for the award, and I want to thank all my coaches and teammates, as well as my hitting coaches, Matt Jones and Blake Butcher, for all their support throughout the year.”

Five Morgan players made the All-Region first team, including junior infielder Drew Ainslie, junior designated hitter Eli Whitlow, senior catcher Robert Pearson, junior outfielder Jack Whitlow, and junior pitcher Davis Strickland.

Two players, senior infielder Jake Jenkins and senior pitcher Skylar McCoy, were named to the All-Region second team.

Morgan County head coach Steve Westmoreland said the entire Morgan coaching staff was proud of every player on the team and felt “excited” about all the postseason awards.

“We are really excited for each one of the guys who made the All-Region team,” Westmoreland said. “Sweeping all three of the Player of the Year awards speaks to not only these guys’ level of talent but the kind of team we had this year, where each and every player helped find a way to win games.”
